A Progressive Warrior Queen-Isn't That an Oxymoron?

In case you don't know the story of Boadicea (Boudicca), in a nutshell it goes like this.

Boadicea's tribe, the Iceni, lived peacefully as a client tribe under Roman rule. After her husband's death corrupt Roman officials reneged on the agreement that left the Iceni in peace. When Boadicea, still the leader of her tribe, went to protest this, she was flogged and her daughters were raped before her eyes.

She returned to her tribe and raised a rebellion against the Romans that was short lived, brutal, and ended in her death.

Understand, I'm not looking to raze Colchester, or leave piles of bodies behind me. However, the Radical Right Religionists and the Corporate sponsors of the Chattel Society have declared war on us who are "others".

I say we fight back.  Right now, I'm fighting back primarily at Texas Kaos. Please come join me.

Podcast Fridays:Whedonverse Edition, Part II

posted Friday, 27 June 2008

btlstudiosWe may not have a sequel to Serenity (yet), but in honor of the fundraising campaign, Can't Stop the Serenity celebrating one of my favorite writers, Joss Whedon, to the benefit of Equality Now, this week, we'll finish up our look at the Whedonverse in podcasting. Be sure to check out the dates of CStS in your area, thanks to BeckyH

What would you do if you loved a show so much that even after seven years, you wanted more story?

You might follow Buffy Season 8 courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, but if you really, REALLY want more story-you'll make up your own. Fanfic is as old as Spock's sexy ear points. Podcasting has opened up a whole new vista for fanficcers-they can write, cast, and produce their own audio (or video) dramas to fill in the gaps in the story.

Thus was born Buffy Between the Lines. I'm early in the episodes, so I don't know how well it will wear ultimately, but they're off to a pretty good start, and they work their asses off to tell stories in the Buffyverse that hang together with what's already known. So, if you're a genre geek, give it a try.

If the hunger for more Buffyverse is vast even after seven seasons (and five of its spinoff, Angel), then fans of the prematurely cancelled Firefly are gorram ravenous. You can feed that appetite with a number of offerings conveniently gathered at Badger Books.

My favorites are: Badger's World, which is successful because it takes a part of the Firefly 'verse, Persephone's seamy underworld as seen by not by the kingpin himself, but his longsuffering minions. It's a very enjoyable twist on the usual "hero" story, with more than a little of the slapstick applied.

Jill Arroway's Borderline is a prequel to Firefly, built on the conceit of a documentarian filming during the civil war that set so many things in motion for the characters of Firefly/Serenity. Very well produced and written, it reveals the process by which a true believer becomes a doubting martyr by the end of the limited run series.

So, now that I've revealed what a great big genre geek I am, what are you listening to?

Happy Friday!!!
